MTBc – 1. bike festival in Bovec, 21. – 22. oktober

Mountain-biking is tightly-knit with the Soča valley, where TRUE mountains lie. Bovec or Bc, as it is called by the locals is the centre of gornje posočje (upper part of Posočje) and is an ideal place for lovers of mountain bikes and nature. MTBc is the combination of both, an event devised to become traditional in all yearly seasons. The inaugural autumn edition was, as every event in its beginning, filled with plenty unknown variables but nevertheless, an excellent experience and springboard for future events.

The MTBc event took place on the weekend of 22.10-23.10. and brought together a team of local and regional lovers of mountain bikes. We gathered at the Alpska šola Bovec shop and headed for Matajur or Montemagiore (its Italian name), or more specifically, the observatory on the Italian side of the border. Optimism was not at its greatest in the morning, as we ascended along a curvy road through dense fog, the temperature being 7 C. We put on thick socks, knee pads and wind-stoppers to warm up a bit.The MTBc event took place on the weekend of 22.10-23.10. and brought together a team of local and regional lovers of mountain bikes. Biking and pushing the bikes toward the top of Matajur raised our spirits and optimism, especially when rays of sunlight cut through the dense fog. At the hut, we were treated to views of a “sea”, not the Adriatic, mind you, but a “sea of fog” beneath us.

After a quick snack, we put on goggles and began biking. The widely known path toward Špeter (San Pietro al Natisone) never ceases to amaze, especially when a queue of bikers on the way to the finish, cuts through the thick fog. The autumn colours certainly livened up the experience, not to mention the brown leaves that covered and hid “stone traps” on the path. As we sped through the valley, enthusiastic screams could be heard and wide grins appeared on our faces.

We had to replace only one inner tube and make a stop here and there to double-check the number of participants, as, of course, there were a couple of tumbles. After reaching the gravel road and passing through the narrow hairpins, we completed our descent at the local bike park and finished at the famous pastry shop and coffee place in Špeter.

After a short reprieve, Alpska šola Bovec and DK sport picked us up and drove us to the Bovec side of the valley. Here, we did a few more descents along some local roads and paths. This day was certainly full of biking adventures!

To top it all off, we were treated to a picnic, courtesy of Apartments Skok. A truly wonderful day in the midst of the Julian Alps. But the best news of all, was the desire to repeat the event as soon as possible.

Many thanks to all our partners, sponsors and most of all, the participants. We hope you had as much fun as we did!

See you again in spring! 😉
