Materials and Technologies

When choosing clothing and equipment for outdoor activities, the product's appearance is not the only thing that matters. Materials affect weather protection, warmth, breathability, weight, durability, and comfort.

In this guide, we present the most common materials and technologies found in products from brands like Patagonia, Karpos, Black Diamond, and Smartwool.

Since each brand uses different materials and construction, always check the specific product description and manufacturer's instructions.

1. Waterproofing, water repellency, and breathability

These terms do not mean the same thing:

  • water-repellent material sheds light rain or snow but is generally not intended for prolonged exposure to heavy rain;

  • waterproof material has a membrane or coating that prevents water from passing through;

  • breathable material allows heat and moisture generated during movement to escape;

  • windproof material reduces the passage of cold air through the garment.

Good breathability is important for intense activity, while effective waterproof protection is needed for long-term exposure to rain or snow.

Two-, two-and-a-half-, and three-layer constructions

In waterproof clothing, you may encounter different constructions:

  • 2-layer construction consists of an outer material and a membrane, usually with a separate inner lining;

  • 2.5-layer construction is lighter and more compact and lacks a traditional separate lining;

  • 3-layer construction combines the outer material, membrane, and inner protective layer into a single unit, making it suitable for more demanding use.

The number of layers alone does not determine quality. The right choice depends on the activity, weather conditions, desired weight, and durability.

2. Patagonia

H₂No® Performance Standard

H₂No® Performance Standard is Patagonia’s benchmark for testing waterproofness, breathability, surface water repellency, and long-term durability.

It is not a single fabric, but a standard by which Patagonia laboratory- and field-tests materials and finished products. H₂No® labeled products can be made in various two-, two-and-a-half-, or three-layer constructions.

Capilene®

Capilene® is Patagonia's family of fabrics for base layers and activewear. They are designed to wick moisture, dry quickly, and provide comfort during movement.

Individual versions differ in thickness, breathability, and thermal efficiency. Lighter versions are suitable for warmer conditions and intense activity, while heavier ones are for colder weather.

R1®

R1® is Patagonia's family of technical mid-layers. The materials are designed to provide warmth, breathability, and moisture-wicking during activity.

R1® variants differ in construction and purpose, so please check the features of the specific product.

Recycled materials

Patagonia uses recycled polyester, recycled nylon, and other recycled raw materials in many of its products.

The proportion of recycled materials is not the same for all products. Precise information is stated in the composition of each individual product.

Organic cotton and hemp

Organic cotton is grown according to organic farming standards. Hemp fibers are durable and are often combined with cotton or other fibers.

These materials are primarily suitable for everyday use, travel, and less intense activities.

3. Karpos

Karpos uses various technical and natural materials for its hiking, mountaineering, climbing, ski touring, and mountain running clothing.

Pertex®

Pertex® is a family of lightweight technical fabrics. Depending on the version, they are used for wind protection, increased durability, or as lightweight outer materials for insulated clothing.

Pertex® material properties vary, so it is necessary to check the label and description of the specific product.

Polartec®

Polartec® denotes various technical fabrics for warmth, breathability, stretch, and moisture management.

Thinner versions are suitable for intense movement, while thicker ones provide greater thermal protection. Some versions have a grid or structured interior that improves moisture wicking and reduces weight.

Natural down

Down provides a good warmth-to-weight ratio and is highly compressible. It is especially suitable for cold and predominantly dry conditions.

The quality or ability of down to create insulating volume is often indicated by the fill power value. A higher value generally means greater volume relative to the weight of the down.

Fill power alone does not determine how warm the entire garment is. Warmth is also influenced by the amount of fill, construction, and distribution of the down.

Merino wool

Karpos uses merino wool in some base and mid-layers. Wool helps regulate body temperature, absorbs moisture, and develops odors more slowly than many synthetic materials.

Some merino products are combined with synthetic fibers for faster drying, increased stretch, or durability.

Polygiene®

Polygiene® is a treatment designed to inhibit the growth of odor-causing bacteria in textiles. It may allow you to wear the garment longer between washes.

The presence and type of treatment must be indicated for the specific product.

4. Black Diamond

Black Diamond manufactures clothing and technical equipment for climbing, mountaineering, hiking, skiing, and other outdoor activities.

BD.dry™

BD.dry™ is Black Diamond's technology for waterproof and breathable clothing. It is used in products designed for protection against rain, snow, and wind.

Individual products have different constructions, levels of protection, and breathability. Always check the data for your chosen model.

Empel™

Empel™ is a water-repellent treatment that Black Diamond uses in some products. It is intended to reduce water absorption by the outer fabric.

A water-repellent treatment alone does not mean the product is completely waterproof. The level of protection also depends on the membrane, construction, seams, and zippers.

Synthetic insulation

In some insulated clothing, Black Diamond uses synthetic fills, including various PrimaLoft® insulations.

Synthetic insulation dries relatively quickly and retains some of its thermal efficiency even when wet. The exact properties depend on the type and amount of fill used.

Technical equipment materials

Materials such as aluminum alloys, steel, nylon, polyester, and high-performance synthetic fibers are used in climbing and mountaineering equipment.

The material alone does not determine the suitability or safety of the equipment. The intended use, technical specifications, certifications, limitations, and manufacturer's instructions must be considered.

Do not use technical equipment without proper knowledge and training.

5. Smartwool

Smartwool specializes in merino wool products, primarily socks, base layers, and outdoor apparel.

Merino wool

Merino wool is a fine natural fiber that helps regulate body temperature. It helps retain heat in cold weather and allows moisture to escape in higher temperatures.

Its important properties include:

  • good thermal efficiency relative to weight;

  • moisture regulation;

  • breathability;

  • reduced susceptibility to odor development;

  • retention of some thermal comfort even when wet.

Merino wool is not always used on its own. It is often combined with nylon, polyester, or elastane for increased durability, better fit, and faster drying.

Indestructawool™

Indestructawool™ is Smartwool's construction technology designed to increase the durability of socks in high-wear areas.

The use of this technology depends on the model and is stated in the product description.

Intraknit™

Intraknit™ is a knitting method where different material structures are arranged according to the needs of specific body parts.

This type of construction can combine zones for more warmth, breathability, mobility, or support while minimizing seams.

Core Spun

In Core Spun construction, merino wool is wrapped around a more durable synthetic fiber core. This allows the material to retain the feel and properties of wool against the skin while gaining increased durability.

6. PrimaLoft®

PrimaLoft® is a family of synthetic insulations. Fine fibers trap air and help maintain body heat.

PrimaLoft® variants differ by:

  • thermal efficiency;

  • weight and compressibility;

  • moisture resistance;

  • breathability;

  • recycled content.

Exact properties depend on the type of insulation used in the specific product.

7. DWR – Durable Water Repellent

DWR is a surface treatment applied to the outer material that causes water to form beads and slide off the surface more easily.

DWR by itself does not make a product completely waterproof. In waterproof garments, it helps prevent the outer fabric from becoming saturated with water, which improves comfort and helps maintain the membrane's breathability.

The effect can gradually decrease due to use, dirt, and washing. It can often be restored through proper washing, drying, or using an appropriate water-repellent restorer. Always follow the manufacturer's instructions.

8. Most common fibers

Polyester

Polyester is a durable synthetic fiber that dries quickly and retains its shape well. It is often used in fleece, base layers, and sportswear.

Nylon or Polyamide

Nylon is a strong and abrasion-resistant synthetic fiber. It is often used in jackets, pants, backpacks, and technical equipment.

Elastane

Elastane adds stretch to a material and allows for greater freedom of movement. It is usually used in combination with other fibers.

Cotton

Cotton is a soft and comfortable natural fiber, primarily suitable for everyday use and less intense activities in dry conditions.

Because it absorbs moisture and dries slowly, it is usually not the best choice for intense activity in cold or wet weather.

Lyocell

Lyocell is a cellulose fiber that is soft, breathable, and provides good moisture regulation. It is often used in blends with other natural or synthetic fibers.

9. How to choose the right material?

Before purchasing, consider:

  1. In what weather will you be using the product?

  2. How intense will the activity be?

  3. Do you primarily need protection against rain, wind, or cold?

  4. How important are low weight, breathability, and small pack size?

  5. Will you be using the product frequently in wet conditions?

For adapting to different conditions, we recommend layering:

  • base layer wicks moisture away from the skin;

  • mid-layer provides warmth;

  • outer layer protects against wind, rain, or snow.

10. Product care

Proper care helps maintain functionality and extend the life of your product.

Always follow the instructions on the manufacturer's label. Pay special attention to washing merino wool, waterproof membranes, down products, and garments with a water-repellent treatment.

If you are unsure which material or product is suitable for your activity, please contact us. We will be happy to help you choose.
